Tony Vaughan is the founder and lead adviser at BusinessValuation.co.uk. With 2,500+ completed business value appraisals. specialising in partial sales, staged exits, EOT transitions, and strategic partnerships. He has valued hundreds of businesses across a wide range of sectors and transaction types.

For trade sales, MBOs, and EOT transactions, he works alongside trusted specialist partners. For more specialist valuation requirements, the right partner support is introduced where needed. BusinessValuation.co.uk exists to ensure every client gets the right expertise for their situation, not a one-size-fits-all approach.

Why experience matters in business valuation

Business valuation is not a purely technical exercise. It requires commercial judgement, an understanding of how buyers assess risk and opportunity, and the ability to interpret financial data in the context of real-world transactions. Generic multiples and online calculators cannot replicate this.

Tony brings direct experience of what buyers actually pay for UK businesses, how deal structures affect value, and where owners commonly over- or under-estimate what their business is worth. The valuations produced by BusinessValuation.co.uk are grounded in market reality, not theory.

Background and career

Tony's career began in corporate finance and M&A advisory, where he spent several years advising business owners on acquisitions, disposals and management buyouts. Over that time he has personally overseen 2,500+ business value appraisals for UK SME owners. giving him first-hand experience of what buyers actually look for, how deals are structured, and why transactions succeed or fail.

He moved into independent business valuation after recognising that too many UK business owners were making critical decisions. About selling, retiring, or restructuring. Without access to reliable, independent valuation advice. The market was split between large advisory firms with fees that SME owners could not justify, and free online calculators that produced meaningless numbers.

BusinessValuation.co.uk was created to fill that gap: to provide straightforward, commercially grounded valuation guidance for UK SME owners at a sensible price point, or, for qualifying businesses considering a sale or exit, completely free of charge.

Our valuation methodology

Every valuation produced by BusinessValuation.co.uk is overseen by Tony, using established methodologies appropriate to the business, sector, and purpose. Depending on the complexity of the engagement, specialist partners may be involved.

Maintainable earnings approaches

Normalised EBITDA and adjusted profits assessed against sector-relevant multiples. Calibrated to current buyer appetite, not historic averages.

Discounted cash flow analysis

Forward-looking valuations grounded in realistic forecasts, discount rates that reflect actual SME risk, and sensitivity analysis on the assumptions that matter.

Comparable transaction benchmarking

Real UK SME deal data, not generic industry multiples. Adjusted for size, growth, customer concentration and deal structure.

All adjusted for the specific commercial characteristics of the business. We do not use automated tools, generic industry multiples, or formula-based outputs. Every assessment reflects professional judgement, real market data, and a practical understanding of what buyers in the relevant market actually pay.

How Tony works

Tony works directly with business owners throughout the process. Initial conversations are confidential and without obligation. For free indicative valuations, the process typically involves a short guided enquiry form, a confidential discussion, and a professionally considered valuation range delivered within days.

For more complex or specialist formal valuation assignments, such as EOT transactions, shareholder disputes, or court-directed matters, Tony coordinates with a network of experienced valuation professionals to ensure the right level of support is in place.

Confidentiality and owner-manager focus

Every conversation is treated as confidential by default. Discovery calls are covered by mutual NDA from the outset, information is exchanged via secure document sharing, and nothing about your business is discussed externally without your written consent. The work is built around owner-managers: the people who actually built the business, carry the risk, and will live with the outcome of any sale, restructure or transition.

The independence promise

BusinessValuation.co.uk does not take commission from buyers, brokers, lenders or any other transaction counterparty. Fees are fixed and agreed upfront. Engagement letters explicitly state the conflict position. We do not act for both sides of an adversarial process, such as a divorce or shareholder dispute, unless explicitly appointed as a Single Joint Expert. That structural independence is what allows the valuation to be useful, not just persuasive.

Key guides and articles by Tony

A library of in-depth guides, methodology explainers and sector commentary written and overseen by Tony is published in our Articles & Guides section. New pieces are added regularly. Covering valuation drivers, exit planning, EOT mechanics, and what UK buyers are actually paying.
